Drummers and acoustics experts, i have a question about equipment?

You know when you go to a show and there's a transparent barrier between the drum set and the audience? My question is, what is that thing called (if it has a particular name other than "transparent barrier") and why do they put it there? Is it to make the drums sound quieter?
