What do you call a down syndrome ?

For my philosophy of uality course, im doing an exploratory essay on ual relationships with people who have a mental retardation- in this case down syndrome. That is if the individual with the desire is mentally stable. Is there a word for people with a mental retardation / down syndrome ?
